KENT, Ohio — Six Kent State and two Ohio University photojournalism students participated in the third annual photographer’s workshop at the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series presented by First Energy Sept. 26.

Akron Children’s PR Department assigned students to capture images of a sideline hero, an Akron Children’s Hospital patient who has conquered a serious illness, stationed at individual mile markers called Hero Zones with “press for power” signs to motivate runners throughout the race.

“It was my job to take photos of the hero, their families, the race, and using my skills in photojournalism, tell a story about the hero and the marathon,” said Sophia Adornetto, senior advertising major and photo editor of The Burr Magazine.

Afterward, the photographers returned to the hospital and collaborated with professionals to edit and select the best images for their portfolio. They then had a portfolio review for their clients, documenting the moments the heroes can remember.

“It’s much more than taking photos,” Adornetto said. “It’s celebrating the hero and all they have overcome.”

The Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series was designed to encourage participation for all fitness levels. Every race entry directly benefits Akron Children’s Hospital.
